IVF Process: How It Works

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) involves removing some eggs from a woman and fertilizing these eggs outside of the body in a test tube. Couples who undergo IVF are well educated as to these steps prior to embarking on this journey.

Step One – Fertility Test
The first step in the IVF process is the fertility assessment. Both the father and the mother must be tested. Doctors check the condition of the woman’s fallopian tubes to be sure they are functioning properly. Men must give a sperm sample that is analyzed for virility and mobility.

Step Two – Stimulating Hormone
Step two in the IVF process involved the administration of a follicle-stimulating drug. Women need to inject the drug each morning into their stomach region for two weeks prior to ovulation beginning right after their period. The follicle-stimulating hormone encourages the woman to release more than one egg. Ultrasounds monitor egg production during this time.

Step Three – Egg Retrieval
A surgeon will insert a needle into the vaginal wall and suck out the eggs. It is hoped that there will be many healthy eggs at this point. If the follicle-stimulating hormone has been successful, there should be at least ten eggs to harvest.

Step Four – Fertilization and Implantation
The healthiest eggs are fertilized in a lab Petri dish. Prior to implantation the doctor decides which, and how many, fertilized eggs will be implanted in the mother’s uterus. Only the eggs that look the healthiest will be used.

After the fertilized eggs are implanted it is just a waiting game to see how many embryos actually implant on the uterine wall and continue to grow. The mother is monitored closely during this time.

The IVF process is very emotional and, unfortunately, does not always work the first time. Many couples go through the process several times before they are successful. But, for those who are unable to conceive naturally, IVF offers hope, and the amazing possibility of having a child.
